Chiefs WR Rashee Rice’s Injury May Not Be as Bad as Initially Expected: Report

The injury to Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice may not be as bad as initially expected. On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, “After further testing on Rice’s knee, there remains uncertainty over the extent of the injury.”

Schefter adds, “After consulting with team doctors and receiving second opinions, more tests are required to determine the full extent of Rice’s injury and his recovery timeline.” According to Schefter, the team isn’t expecting to have an answer until next week.

This doesn’t exactly feel like bad news, as the Chiefs feared Rice had torn his ACL, which would keep him out for the rest of the season. However, the team instead needs to run more tests before determining the severity of the injury.

While he still could very well have a torn ACL, it seems like a positive update that the Chiefs aren’t yet sure what it is after initial testing.

Rice left the Chiefs’ 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in the first quarter after suffering a knee injury. Rice was trying to make a tackle on an interception, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes ran into his knee. Here’s a video of the play:

Rice was carted to the locker room and ruled out for the remainder of the game. Head coach Andy Reid even said during the game, “It’s not good.”

Rice has emerged as the Chiefs’ No. 1 wide receiver this season and was off to a strong start through the first three weeks of the season.

In Week 1, Rice had seven catches for 103 yards. In Week 2, he had five catches for 75 yards and a touchdown. In Week 3, he had 12 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown.

With Marquise “Hollywood” Brown unlikely to play this season, Rice was going to be the top wideout in a below-average receiving room. However, if Rice is forced to miss extended time, Xavier Worthy and Justin Watson would be the starters with JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman, and Skyy Moore also factoring in.

Tight end Travis Kelce would, of course, need to take on a bigger role as he did in Week 4 when he led the Chiefs in targets (nine), receptions (seven), and receiving yards (89).

The Chiefs will continue to run tests on Rice and hope that it’s not a torn ACL. Kansas City is 4-0 and plays on Monday Night Football against the New Orleans Saints in Week 5.
