Shocking results in the first few days of new speed traps
Since the end of October, 26 new, permanently installed speed measuring devices have been in operation in Budapest. The initial results are alarming.
The Budapest police and the city administration announced the locations of the new speed traps at a joint press conference four days before they went into operation. The information was disseminated via various media for days.
Ten thousand offences in a very short time
Despite intensive educational work, 10,000 (!) speeding offences were registered in the first few days. There was no improvement in the situation, although extensive information was given to drivers during the test phase before the ‘hot’ start of the system. The speeders must now expect fines of at least 50,000 forints (approx. 120 euros).
Hotspots of speeding
Most speeding offenders (2,055 drivers) were recorded at the Buda bridgehead of the Petőfi Bridge. In second place is Üllői út, where the camera in Vágóhíd utca photographed 1,700 speeders. Third place was taken by Szentendrei út, where 1,225 speeding offences were documented in Raktár utca over four days. The cameras recorded the fewest offences on the inner-city section of motorway 6 in Növény utca, with fewer than 50 speeding offenders recorded.
