Successful lung transplant in Budapest
In Budapest, a successful lung transplant was performed on a fourteen-year-old boy in a unique collaboration between three medical institutions.
The lungs of the boy, who suffers from a serious, rare disease, were so badly damaged that he had no chance of recovering on his own. At the Pál Heim Children’s Hospital, the boy was kept alive for weeks with the help of an artificial lung until the specialists could begin the transplantation.
Enikő Kertész, spokesperson of the National Oncological Institute, reported on the successful lung transplant. Long-term care after the transplant is provided by Semmelweis University. The case clearly shows the extraordinary results that can be achieved when different healthcare institutions work together. The boy’s condition began to improve after the transplant. Although he has a long rehabilitation ahead of him, he has a good chance of leading a full life, according to the doctors.
