Man Arrested in Fatal Shooting of 7-Year-Old Boy on Tribal Reservation

What’s New

Authorities have apprehended a man suspected in the fatal shooting of a 7-year-old boy earlier this month on a tribal reservation in Colorado.

Jeremiah Hight, 23, was arrested Tuesday afternoon on a mesa near Oljato, Utah, within the Navajo Nation reservation, according to Navajo police on Thursday. Members of the department’s dog team, alongside agents from the Bureau of Indian Affairs drug enforcement division, located and apprehended Hight after a days-long search in a remote area, Navajo police spokesperson Chrissy Largo said Thursday.

Why It Matters

Hight was arrested just a day after the FBI offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to his capture and conviction.

The December 11 shooting occurred at a home in Towaoc, Colorado, located on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation, roughly 110 miles east of where Hight was eventually apprehended.

The FBI handles major criminal investigations on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation, situated in the Four Corners region where Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona converge.

“Law enforcement authorities have been searching for Hight in the Oljato area since Saturday, December 21, 2024,” the Navajo Police Department said in a press release shared to Facebook. “A federal arrest warrant for murder and other charges was issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigations-Durango Office.”

According to the Navajo Police Department, Hight was taken into custody “without incident.”

“This was a joint investigation by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Division of Drug Enforcement, NPD K-9 Unit and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations-Kayenta District,” police said.

Officials have not disclosed any information about the events leading up to the shooting. The victim was identified as 7-year-old Zamias Lang.

Prior to the arrest this week, the FBI offered up a reward of $10,000 for any information on Hight.

“Hight, 23, is a Native American man with brown hair and brown eyes. He is 6’0″ tall and weighs 400 pounds. He has tattoos on his right leg, left arm, right arm, right shoulder, neck, and left shoulder. He has a pierced left ear and a scar on his chest,” the FBI said. “He has ties to Monument Valley in the Four Corners area. He might be armed and has proven he can be dangerous.”

What People Are Saying

An online fundraiser for Lang’s funeral described him as a “bright and loving” child.

“He fell victim to senseless gun violence, leaving behind family, friends, and a community who loved him dearly,” a GoFundMe page set up for Lang said. “As we navigate this unimaginable tragedy, we’re coming together to support the family with funeral expenses and other related costs. Your contribution will help alleviate some of the financial burdens, allowing the family to focus on grieving, healing, and seeking justice.”

What’s Next

It is currently unclear whether Hight has legal representation to address the charges against him.

The Navajo Police Department and the FBI are likely to reveal more information on the incident and the investigation in the coming days.
