Significant Pay Rise in the Education Sector from January

After this year’s 32.2 percent increase, the salaries of teachers and kindergarten teachers will rise by an average of 21.2 percent from January, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior said on the government’s Facebook page on Thursday.

Bence Rétvári stressed that “the biggest increase in teachers’ salaries in Hungary’s history is underway,” adding that in 2025 the average teacher’s salary will be HUF 844,000 (EUR 2,053). He explained that

in four years, teachers’ salaries will increase by more than 93 percent, meaning that they will almost double.

“Another piece of good news is that at the end of the year, teachers in public schools will receive an average target bonus of HUF 187,500 (EUR 456). Part of this is fixed at 75,000 forints, the rest is performance-related,” he said. He added: “This means that those who are more intensively involved with students in class can better engage their attention, make the lessons more enjoyable and interesting, and those who are more involved with students outside of class can receive a higher amount.”

The State Secretary pointed out that the increase in teachers’ salaries is already having a visible impact, with 3,000 more teachers in schools than a few months ago, and a record 15,000 more enrolments in higher education.

“All of this is to ensure that children are taught by the best qualified teachers, that they receive the most up-to-date knowledge and that they graduate with the most competitive qualifications possible,” said Bence Rétvári.
