Tourist arrivals up siginificantly – The Budapest Times
In November 2024, 1.2 million guests spent 2.8 million tourism nights at tourist (commercial, private and other) accommodation establishments1. The number of arrivals surpassed the previous year by 17% and that of tourism nights by 9.7%. The number of nights spent by domestic guests exceeded November 2023 by 3.8% and those spent by international guests by 15%. In January-November 2024, domestic guests spent 2.0% and international guests 9.5% more tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments than in the same period of the previous year.
In November 2024 overall, the number of arrivals and tourism nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments grew by 17% and 9.7% respectively. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of arrivals increased by 13% and that of tourism nights by 6.7% compared to November 2023. 73% of tourism nights were at commercial accommodation establishments, where turnover was 7.2% higher than a year earlier. Private and other accommodation establishments registered 17% more tourism nights than a year earlier.
The number of domestic tourist arrivals grew by 10% and that of domestic tourism nights by 3.8% compared to the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of domestic arrivals increased by 4.5% and domestic tourism nights by 1.6% compared to November 2023. 607 thousand domestic guests spent nearly 1.3 million tourism nights in tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 467 thousand tourist arrivals and 978 thousand tourism nights. 80% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 7.0% higher than a year earlier. The number of domestic tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments was up by 5.0% compared to November 2023. The number of domestic tourism nights increased the most in the Győr and Pannonhalma tourism area2 (by 25%) and decreased the most in the Sopron region (by 12%). The number of nights spent by domestic guests in tourist accommodation increased by 9.4% in Budapest and by 1.6% at Lake Balaton.
The number of international arrivals increased by 23% and international tourism nights by 15% compared to the same month last year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of international arrivals increased by 19% and international tourism nights by 13% compared to November 2023. The 639 thousand international guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent about 1.6 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 445 thousand guests and almost 1.1 million tourism nights, respectively. 86% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of international tourism nights was 13% higher than a year earlier. The number of international tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments grew by 27% compared to November 2023. The number of international tourism nights increased most in the Pécs region (by 10%), while the Gyula region and Greater Budapest tourism area saw the largest decrease (both by 13%) compared to the same period of the previous year. In Budapest, the number of international tourism nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments increased by 22%, partly due to the European Summit in early November, while it decreased by 1.7% at Lake Balaton.
A total of 21,856 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 2,264 commercial and 19,592 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.
Of commercial accommodation establishments, 937 hotels and 984 boarding houses were open for part or all of November.
The total gross sales revenues of tourist accommodation establishments amounted to nearly HUF 78 billion, which was 24% higher at current prices than a year earlier.
Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to spend about HUF 2.5 billion, 2.6% more at current prices, at tourist accommodation establishments compared to the same month of the previous year.
In January-November 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year tourist accommodation establishments registered a total of 41.3 million tourism nights, up 5.6%.
Domestic guests and international guests spent 2.0% and 9.5% more tourism nights respectively (20.8 million and 20.5 million) in tourist accommodation establishments.
