Red Sox Trade Proposal Would Land Boston $340 Million Superstar in Five-Player Deal
The Boston Red Sox made a trade for Garrett Crochet earlier this offseason. They have a loaded farm system and could deal some of their talented prospects to bring in a superstar to help them win now.
Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy proposed this trade that would bring Fernando Tatis Jr. from the San Diego Padres to the Red Sox:
- Padres receive: outfielder Wilyer Abreu, right-handed pitcher Kutter Crawford, infielder Franklin Arias (No. 4 prospect) and right-handed pitcher Richard Fitts (No. 10 prospect)
- Red Sox receive: outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr.
Trading two top 10 prospects, Abreu, and Crawford for Tatis is a price the Red Sox should have no trouble paying. Tatis is one of the best players in Major League Baseball when he’s on the field. He has dealt with injuries and a suspension but could be the star the Red Sox were in search of when they went after Juan Soto.
“This would be a lot. Boston would give up two cheap proven big-league talents in Abreu and Crawford,” wrote McAvoy. “Plus, the Red Sox would give up two elite prospects in Arias and Fitts. In this scenario, the Red Sox would replace Abreu with a slugger for the future in Tatis.”
Tatis is a two-time All-Star, two-time Silver Slugger, Gold Glover and Platinum Glover. In the last two seasons, he has 46 home runs and a .265/.329/.467 slash line.
Abreu won a Gold Glove last season, which was his first full year in the big leagues. He is a talented young player who would likely be necessary in any trade for Tatis.
