Villány Wine Region Is on the Rise

This year, the local spa festival will be held for the 30th time, and thanks to the long weekend linked to the public holiday, it will last for five days between August 20-24, the mayor of Harkány announced. By the time, festival goers will see the completion of several new developments in the Villány wine region, where the municipality is located.

At the press conference, Tamás Baksai, Mayor of Harkány, said that in addition to the festival, a number of other events will be organized at the Harkány spa, that has been hosting the town’s biggest events for years. He stressed that five mini-festivals with popular performers will be held this year at the facility, which is famous for its thermal waters.

In addition to the cultural programs, the municipality will also pay special attention this year to parks and playgrounds, and recreational improvements will be implemented.

The spa, that attracted over half a million visitors in 2024, will see a number of improvements this year, including to the children’s pool and the sports pool, following the opening of a new slide park last year, and new services will be introduced.

Gábor Riegl, Mayor of Siklós, said that there is continuous cooperation between the three towns of the wine region (Villány, Harkány and Siklós), thanks to which the organizers and key players in the tourism sector are helping each other to plan the calendar of events and developments. Speaking about their municipalities, he said that

the Siklós Castle would be even more important than before, hosting a number of major events in the future, and its operators would place a greater emphasis on programs dedicated to preserving cultural heritage.

Among these events are the Siklós Castle Days on April 11 and 12, the Siklós Castle Festival between August 8-10 and the Day of National Unity in June.

He pointed out that this year the town is undergoing HUF 1 billion (EUR 2.5 million) worth of development, including the renewal of the spa, the addition of a playground, the improvement of a busy square in the town center, and the start of industrial land investments in the settlement.

István Mayer, Mayor of Villány, said that

some 70-80,000 people spent a night in the “capital” of the wine region, and at least 50,000 people attended popular, nationally known events such as the rosé and red wine festivals last year.

He added that in the next few years, a total of around HUF 5 billion (EUR 12 million) will be invested in Villány. Public spaces will be renovated, active tourism will be developed and the construction of a high quality hotel will start this year.

János Hargitai, MP for the eastern part of the region, said that the motorway link between Hungary and Croatia south of Villány will soon be completed, as the Hungarian government has already built the M6 motorway to the border, which will soon be connected from the Croatian side.
