The 95th Academy Awards ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in 2023
Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical Emilia Pérez received the most nominations at the Academy Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday, with 13 nominations. This year, Dávid Jancsó, the editor of The Brutalist, is another Hungarian nominee, reports Hirado.hu.
In 2022, set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos has won an Oscar for Dune: Part One, shared with production designer Patrice Vermette. Last year, set decorator Zsuzsa Mihalek won an Oscar for her work in Poor Things, sharing the Oscar with production design duo James Price and Shona Heath.
This year, The Brutalist, directed by Brady Corbet and shot in Budapest, was nominated for an Oscar in ten categories, including Best picture, Best director, Best actor (Adrien Brody) and Best film editing (Dávid Jancsó).
The Hungarian professional has worked with Corbett before, and was the editor of The Childhood of a Leader.
Fact
Dávid Jancsó was introduced early to the basics of filmmaking and editing through his parents. His mother was film editor Zsuzsa Csákány, and his father was Miklós Jancsó, an internationally recognized Hungarian film director and screenwriter.
Miklós Jancsó’s films are characterized by long takes, and their plot often takes place in historical periods and at rural settings. A frequent theme of his films is the abuse of power. His works are often allegorical commentaries on Hungary under Communism and the Soviet occupation, although some critics prefer to stress the universal dimensions of Jancsó’s explorations. Towards the end of the 1960s and especially into the 1970s, Jancsó’s work became increasingly stylized and overtly symbolic.
The film version of the Broadway play Wicked, Conclave, about the election of the Pope, and A Complete Unknown, about Bob Dylan’s early years, both received eight nominations.
In addition to The Brutalist, the Oscar-nominated biographical drama Maria and Dune: Part Two also featured a number of Hungarian filmmakers.
In a statement, Csaba Káel, the Government Commissioner for the Development of the Motion Picture Industry, congratulated Dávid Jancsó and all the Hungarian filmmakers who contributed to the worldwide success of The Brutalist, Dune and Maria.
The cooperation between the state and the private sector in the film industry is exemplary, which has made it possible in recent years to create high-quality films in Hungary that stand out among the best in world cinema.
We should all pay tribute to the excellent Hungarian co-producers of these films, as well as to the first-rate professionals of the National Film Institute’s Film Lab – their reputation for dedicated work was a decisive reason for bringing the production of The Brutalist and Maria, made with a special technique, to Hungary,” stressed Csaba Káel.
The nominations were decided by almost 10,000 members of the Film Academy who were eligible to vote. Due to the fires in and around Los Angeles, the nominations were announced almost a week later than originally planned. The 97th Academy Awards will take place on March 2 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. It will be broadcast live to audiences in around 200 countries and territories.
