Pete Alonso Favored To Land $70 Million Deal With Loaded Mets

The Pete Alonso sweepstakes has been quite intriguing to follow this winter.

He was once viewed as the most sought-after first baseman on the market, but following reports of insane contract demands, it seemed like just about every team was ready to land a different first baseman.

Now with free agency coming down to the wire, Alonso has quite the decision to make.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today recently revealed he believes Alonso will head back to the Mets this winter.

“All-Star first baseman Pete Alonso, who badly wants to return to the New York Mets while the club insists they want him back too, must decide whether he’s going to swallow his pride and take the Mets’ three-year offer for about $70 million,” Nightengale wrote. “Alonso, the four-time All-Star whose 226 homers are the most in the National League since 2019, has simply run out of alternatives.

“The first-base carousel moved quickly in December with nearly one-third of the teams in baseball switching first basemen, and leaving Alonso standing. The Toronto Blue Jays really have been Alonso’s only serious suitor outside the Mets, and if Alonso really wanted to sign there, or anywhere else on a short-term deal, it likely would have happened already.”

At this point, it seems like a matter of time before the Mets ink Alonso to the three-year deal Nightengale noted.

Of course, nothing is final until a deal is signed. Alonso could still be stolen out from under the Mets’ nose if there’s a team willing to give him more money on a three-year deal.

There’s also a chance he takes a shot on a shorter deal with opt-outs. The Cincinnati Reds were mentioned as a potential suitor.
