A federal appeals court on Tuesday declined to halt a judge’s order requiring President Donald Trump’s administration to release billions of dollars in federal grants and loans. Despite a prior court ruling blocking a broad freeze on federal funding, states argue that the money remains inaccessible.
The 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston rejected the administration’s emergency appeal but noted that it expected the lower court judge to clarify his order promptly.
The Justice Department pushed back against the ruling, calling the lower court’s sweeping directive to maintain the flow of all federal grants and loans an “intolerable judicial overreach.”
The decision originated from U.S. District Court Judge John McConnell in Rhode Island, who was the first judge to determine that the administration had failed to comply with a court order.
