Responding to the speeches of MPs in parliament on Monday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said peace negotiations in connection with the war in Ukraine must be gauged from Hungary’s point of view, and the eventual agreement must guarantee the security of Hungarians and, through this, Europeans.
PM Orbán said Hungary and the Vatican had taken the side of peace from the beginning, and now the US was also on the side of peace.
Responding to opposition charges that the ruling parties were “pro-Russian”, the prime minister said that by the same logic, the US was also “pro-Russian”. “Let me congratulate them on this view,” he said.
PM Orbán said Ukraine’s fate was “certainly important” but Hungary’s fate was paramount, and the peace agreement “must guarantee the security of Hungary”.
He said Ukraine’s independence and interests, which the opposition was preoccupied with, were “none of our business”.
“We need a peace agreement that guarantees the security of Hungary and, through it, the security of Europeans,” he added.
If Ukraine’s attempt to join NATO failed, and Ukraine again became a buffer state, then this buffer state must be managed in a way that guarantees Hungary’s security. “This is the only point of view,” PM Orbán declared.
