Céline Dion Surprises Reporter With Performance

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Céline Dion still has it.

The iconic pop singer, who has been candid about her battler with still-person syndrome, sat down for an interview with ESPN’s Marty Smith on Tuesday, March 4 — and sang a snippet of her most famous song.

The 56-year-old mother of three attended the TGL match between the Atlanta Drive GC and the Jupiter Links GC at SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where she was interviewed by Smith.

The reporter asked her to choose a song from her “catalogue” that best represented her golf game. Dion took a moment to think about the question before belting out in song.

“I would say,” she said, before singing the start of “My Heart Will Go On” from the Titanic soundtrack. “Near, far, where…” Dion began before encouraging Smith to sing along with her. At one point during the song, Dion changed the lyrics to better fit the occasion. “Wherever you are, I believe that my ball will go on,” she sang.

A clip from the interview was shared on ESPN’s official X account, where it’s received more than 400,000 views. Many people reacted to the impromptu performance.

“Celine Dion is the goddess of song,” one person wrote. “Epic,” someone else said. “The queen of Canada,” a third comment read.

Dion hasn’t been performing much since she was diagnosed with still person syndrome.

“I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it’s been really difficult for me to face these challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through. It hurts me to tell you that I won’t be ready to restart my tour in Europe in February,” Dion shared in a candid Instagram post in December 2022.

“Recently, I’ve been diagnosed with a very rare neurological condition called stiff-person syndrome, which affects something like one in a million people. While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know that this is what has been causing all of the spasms that I’ve been having,” she added.
