We Do Not Want All Our Money to Go to Ukraine, Says Prime Minister

Viktor Orbán gave an interview to Kossuth Radio after the EU summit in Brussels. The Prime Minister evaluated the results of the summit and explained why Hungary vetoed further supporting Ukraine, reports Magyar Nemzet.

“There is a difference of opinion between Hungary and the other 26 countries, and we have solved it so far. But now it is between the pro-peace countries led by the United States and 26 EU Member States,” he pointed out. Mr Orbán added that America was also working for peace, while the 26 countries wanted to work out a counter-strategy to continue the war. The Prime Minister underlined that the Hungarians have been saying the same thing since the war began, that there should be peace because the economy cannot take it. He reminded there was no rational basis for the position now adopted by the 26 member states. Moreover, they have taken serious financial risks in doing so.

If the Europeans go through with this, our last penny will be on the line for war,”

he emphasized. Mr Orbán said that the pro-peace parties were in the majority in NATO, and that money would not come from there either, as the Americans and Turks were also pro-peace. He explained that the Ukrainians want to keep 800,000 people in arms, and the Europeans want to finance this. In fact, after the war, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy wants Europeans to provide a one million-strong army to be stationed in Ukraine, and the Ukrainian state should also be financed, he pointed out. Viktor Orbán added that Europe should also supply and strengthen its own army, and it would also pay a high price for Ukraine’s accession to the EU. There is no money for these purposes, he explained, adding that we do not want all our money to go to Ukraine.

The Prime Minister said that a concept is rising in Europe that wants to support Ukraine while destroying Europe economically, but this must be stopped. “Now is not the time to make a responsible decision on membership,” he emphasized. He recalled that trade between Ukraine and Europe had already been opened up to a certain level, and Hungarian farmers were already nearly ruined. In the event of Ukraine’s accession, agriculture is the sector most at risk, he reminded. Besides, there are 800,000 people in arms and Ukraine was not known for its public security anyway. “To allow the free movement of citizens of such a country to Hungary would be irresponsible at this point in time,” he added. Viktor Orbán also stressed that

Hungary would not be able to take in the hundreds of thousands of guest workers that would come with Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

Regarding the financing of these plans, Mr Orbán said that the European Union is now calculating how much all this adds up to. He thinks that the end of the calculation would be that the EU could not afford this, and from this point of view even the Brussels-based EU was well served by the Hungarian veto.

On the matter of utility bills reduction in Hungary, the Prime Minister reminded that Brussels wants to abolish the cuts. However, the government does not agree with this, as they believe that Hungarian families would not be able to bear it. Viktor Orbán emphasized that every family would pay 500,000 forints (1,255 euros) more a year if there were no cuts in the utility bills.

Speaking about USAID aid, Mr Orbán said that “we are usually happy when money comes into the country, but there are also corrupt dollars,” designed to gain influence. They send money to people and organizations from abroad so that they can influence Hungarian decisions. For this purpose, a lot of money has been spent in Hungary in recent years by foreigners, money from three wallets, he highlighted. The Prime Minister emphasized that

we cannot accept that American money was being used to influence Hungarian public opinion.

Moreover, it was not only money from America, people were also paid from Brussels. According to the Prime Minister, the money from Brussels is also our money, the money that we paid in was used, for example, to ensure that Brussels gets its way on domestic matters. As a third source, he mentioned the Soros network, whose activities also need to be investigated.

As for the domestic political consequences, Viktor Orbán said that now, with the stopping of foreign funding, the debates that are really important for Hungary will take place. Today, we hear a lot of voices in Hungarian politics that are backed by Brussels – Brussels is their masters, and whoever gives the money orders the music, he explained. At the end of the interview, the Prime Minister stated that this is a familiar story, there is nothing new about it, but the brutal thing is that they are now facing it head on.
