Spring Arrives With Heat Record in Budapest

A 105-year-old daily record for heat in the capital was broken on Thursday. The temperature in Újpest (4th district) was 20.3 degrees Celsius, HungaroMet Zrt. announced on its website on Friday.

They meteorological service wrote that

Hungary’s weather has been dominated by a huge anticyclone for a long time, and the extremely dry air over the country and the almost uninterrupted sunshine caused temperatures to rise very rapidly on Thursday morning.

In the afternoon, the peak temperature in Újpest reached 20.3 degrees Celsius, setting a new daily record for the capital. The previous record for this day in Budapest was 18.9 degrees Celsius, recorded in 1920.

HungaroMet said on its Facebook page that Thursday’s temperatures were 22.3 degrees Celsius in the afternoon at Győr’s Likócs station, one tenth of a degree below the daily record of 22.4 degrees Celsius also set in 1920 in Kalocsa.

They also reported earlier that where the overnight cooling was stronger, the daily temperature fluctuation on Wednesday was above 25 degrees. This occurs for one or two short periods each year, typically in early spring.
