Yankees Should Sign J.D. Martinez After Stanton News
The New York Yankees have work to do when it comes to figuring out who will be the designated hitter in 2025.
Giancarlo Stanton is experiencing severe elbow injuries in both elbows, and surgery would sideline him for the entire season. However, the Yankees can’t continue to sit around and wait for him to get healthy either.
Giancarlo Stanton said his elbow injuries are “considered severe in both elbows.” He attributes it to “bat adjustments” from last season and is unsure when he will be able to resume baseball activities. If surgery is needed, he said it would be season-ending.

Filling Stanton’s empty shoes in the lineup will be easier said than done. However, J.D. Martinez could be the best stop-gap option for the Bronx Bombers.

Martinez spent the 2024 season with the New York Mets and hit .235 with 16 home runs and 69 RBI. The six-time All-Star recorded 434 at-bats at 36 years old, and he showed he can still be impactful in the lineup.
Grabbing Martinez would make a lot of sense for the Yankees. He’s known for his power just like Stanton, and the numbers in 2024 were very comparable.
J.D. Martinez | Giancarlo Stanton | |
Average | .235 | .233 |
HR | 16 | 27 |
RBI | 69 | 72 |
OPS | .725 | .773 |
wOBA | .318 | .330 |
wRC+ | 108 | 116 |
fWAR | 0.6 | 0.8 |
Stanton had the better numbers last season, but Martinez’s production won’t create a noticeable drop-off in scoring runs for the Yankees. Martinez will come in right away and provide an impact for Aaron Boone’s lineup.
Martinez has a market value right now of $9.5 million for one-year deal, but the Yankees could probably sign him for less with the season drawing closer. He’s a Scott Boras client, which will make negotiations tougher, but Martinez may be willing to accept $7 million or $7.5 million.
Both numbers would be pay raises from the $4.5 million he received with the Mets last season. Signing Martinez is a move Brian Cashman should be looking to make as soon as possible.
