San Diego Padres’ ace Dylan Cease is entering the final year of his contract. The righty has been among the top pitchers in the league for the last few seasons, and he’s set to get paid at the end of the year.
Tim Britton of The Athletic recently predicted that Cease would sign a massive seven-year contract worth $210 million. This is quite a step up from Spotrac’s projection of five years and $108 million.

“Last season, Cease and Zac Gallen entered in a similar spot: at the same age, earning about the same in arbitration, in line for about the same extension,” Britton wrote. “Then, while Gallen had a nice season, Cease posted another top-five finish in the Cy Young balloting. He’s placed himself in the same group as the top-earning starters from this past winter.”
As long as Cease can put together another season where he receives Cy Young votes, this projection seems to be spot-on.
Putting an average annual value prediction of $30 million per season fits perfectly with Cease and the market. Seven years could be the kind of length he’s looking to sign as well.
Obviously, this number could change over the course of the season. If Cease is injured or struggles in 2025, the number could drop significantly. He could end up having to take a shorter deal with opt-outs.
If Cease continues to improve, the number could even increase, especially with the amount of big spenders on the market. If Cease puts together a top-three finish in National League Cy Young voting, the number could increase from $210 million to $250 million or so.
