M8 Danube bridge closed – The Budapest Times
On Tuesday, extensive construction work began on the scheduled overhaul of the Pentele Bridge, which crosses the Danube south of Dunaújváros.
The concession company MKIF Zrt. has announced that the supports of the 1,700 metre-long bridge, which was handed over in 2007, need to be replaced. This is necessary because slight displacements have been noticed in the dilatation joints. The supports have to ‘absorb’ the total weight of 10,400 tonnes of the Pentele Bridge. A total of 13 supports need to be replaced, including three over the river at a height of 50 metres.
In order to be able to carry out the maintenance work quickly, the carriageway will initially be closed on one side in the direction of Dunavecse from mid-March to the end of May, with full closures on three weekends in April and May to carry out the actual replacement of the bridge elements. From the beginning of July to the end of August, the carriageway will then be closed on one side in the direction of Dunaújváros.
The M8 motorway bridge is expected to be completely closed to traffic for the entire month of June. Drivers will then have to use the Danube bridge further south on the main road 52 between Dunaföldvár and Solt as a diversion.
