EU Affairs Minister Calls on Commission to Keep Strictly within Its Own Competence

EU Commissioner for Rule of Law Michael McGrath has held talks with János Bóka, the Hungarian EU Affairs Minister revealed in a social media post on Monday.

The minister asked the Brussels politician to “simplify things” by implementing three steps. First, the European Commission should only deal with issues within its competence, he stressed.

The politician underlined that in these matters, there should be equality before the law for all Member States. Transparent funding for NGOs should also be “fully ensured,” János Bóka wrote. He added that

it was not the European Commission’s role to fill the gap left by USAID (US Agency for International Development),

referring to the fact that left-wing groups in the European Parliament called on the European Commission to take over funding for NGOs and media outlets, after the money arriving from the US agency was shut down.

The minister emphasized that he would like to see a consensus on these issues and work in that spirit. “If we agree on these points and work accordingly, our lives will be much simpler. And simple is great,” he concluded.
