Hungary Offers Humanitarian Aid to Myanmar after Disastrous Earthquake

The Hungarian government is providing HUF 5 million (EUR 12,400) in emergency humanitarian aid to the survivors of the earthquake in Myanmar under the Hungary Helps program, the State Secretary for programs to help persecuted Christians announced on his social media page.

Tristan Azbej wrote that

the beneficiary of the aid is the Caritas Hungarica, which, through its local Catholic partner, can deliver the aid directly to those most in need.

He emphasized that the people of Myanmar now need not only food, water and medical care, but also hope and solidarity. He recalled that last week’s 7.7 magnitude earthquake was one of the worst natural disasters in Myanmar in the last century. The tragedy has so far claimed at least 1,700 lives, with almost 3,400 injured and 300 missing, but experts say the numbers could rise further.

Tristan Azbej pointed out that the search for survivors is still ongoing under the rubble of the collapsed buildings, while the country’s civil war situation and damaged infrastructure are making rescue efforts and humanitarian aid considerably more difficult.

In addition, the Hungarian Interchurch Aid is donating HUF 3 million (EUR 7,435) to help the victims of the earthquake in Myanmar, the organization told MTI on Tuesday. According to the statement,

food and drinking water shortages have emerged as a result of the disaster, and there is also a threat of epidemics, which requires immediate assistance from humanitarian organizations.

To help the people who lost everything in the earthquake to survive, the relief organization is distributing food and hygiene kits, made possible by donations from those who have taken part in the solidarity action.
