Austria closes border crossings because of foot-and-mouth disease
As of midnight on Saturday morning, Austria has suspended border traffic at numerous border crossings with Hungary due to the spread of the disease in cloven-hoofed animals.
The Hungarian National Police ORFK informed about the measures late Friday evening and pointed out that considerable waiting times are to be expected at the border crossings that remain open.
The following border crossing points were closed to passenger and vehicle traffic from 5 April at midnight: Andau – Jánossomorja, Andau – Kapuvar (from Andau bridge), Wallern – Kapuvar (from Wallern bridge), Baumgarten – Sopron, Ritzing (Helenenschacht) – Sopron (Brennbergbánya), Sieggraben (Herrentisch) – Sopron (Görbehalomtelep), Nikitsch – Sopronkövesd, Deutsch Jahrndorf – Rajka, Nickelsdorf – Rajka, Deutschkreutz – Harka, Neckenmarkt – Harka, Deutschkreutz – Nagycenk, Halbturn – Várbalog, Halbturn – Várbalog (Albertkázmérpuszta), Klostermarienberg – Olmod, Loipersbach – Ágfalva, Schattendorf – Ágfalva, Lutzmannsburg – Zsira, Lutzmannsburg (Rebberg) – Zsira, Lutzmannsburg (Therme) – Zsira, Nikitsch – Zsira.
The border crossing points Szentgotthárd-Rábafüzes, Szentgotthárd (railway), Rönök (for pedestrians), Bucsu-Szombathely, Kőszeg, Alsószölnök, Szentpéterfa, Pinkamindszent, Bozsok, Narda, Felsőcsatár, Vaskeresztes, Pornóapáti, Nemesnedves, Hegyeshalom and Sopron remain open.
The Austrian authorities have ordered the border restrictions to prevent the spread of the highly contagious virus. Travellers should be prepared for longer travel times and plan alternative routes if possible.
