Government to Launch Church Renovation Program for Small Villages

A new church renovation program will soon be launched, affecting villages with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, the State Secretary for Church and Nationality Relations of the Prime Minister’s Office has revealed.
The launch of the program was announced on Sunday in Oszkó, a village of barely 600 people in Vas county (western Hungary), where the newly renovated Church of St. George was inaugurated. Miklós Soltész stressed that the survival of Hungarian villages depends on many factors: “Jobs and services are important, but it also depends to a large extent on the spirituality of the people and the strengthening of the Christian faith.”

“As long as there is a church in a village, there is life there,” he said, adding that this is why the government has decided to renovate churches throughout the Carpathian Basin.
In contrast to Western Europe, we decided to renew our churches in small settlements like Oszkó, and I am sure that the 43 million forints (105,000 euros) of funding that this village had received was used in the best possible way,”
the State Secretary said.
Thanks to the renovation, the Roman Catholic Church in Oszkó has been renewed inside and out. The main problem of the building, water leaks, was solved by insulation, the electrical network was upgraded, and the floor and tiles were replaced.
