‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ Series Headed To Amazon

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Well, if Amazon Prime Video can bring us a bunch of epic fantasy series from the west, why not from a completely different part of the world? Deadline reports that Prime Video is developing “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” based on the “Crane-Iron” book series by Wang Dulu. The Writer/executive producer Jason Ning is penning the series, and Ron Moore is executive producing. Both are working on the series under overall deals at Sony Pictures Television.

It’s far too soon for any specific plot details but for now the official logline for the series reads, “Amidst stunning landscapes and spectacular action, two star-crossed warriors, Shu Lien and Mu Bai, struggle between forbidden love and the pull of modernity, caught between preserving their way of life or embracing a future together.”

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000). A young Chinese warrior steals a sword from a famed swordsman and then escapes into a world of romantic adventure with a mysterious man.

“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” was adapted into a film by Ang Lee in 2000. The film pulled in an impressive $214 million at the box office and was nominated for ten Oscars including Best Picture and Best Director. It went home with four trophies on Oscar night: Best Foreign Language Film, best Choreography, Best Original Score, and Best Art Direction. It lost Best Picture to Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator.”

In the years since the release of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” one of its stars – Michelle Yeoh – has experienced a meteoric career trajectory. She is now a hotly sought-after talent, having won an Oscar for Best Leading Actress for her performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” spawned a sequel not seen much in the West and poorly reviewed. “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny” was based on the fifth and final book in Wang Dulu’s “Crane-Iron” series, “Iron Knight, Silver Vase.” It went direct to video in Western markets, showing chiefly on Netflix. Michelle Yeoh reprised her memorable role from the previous movie, with most of the rest of the cast being brand new.

“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” is actually the fourth book in the “Crane-Iron” series. The first three are “Crane Startles Kunlun,” “Precious Sword, Golden Hairpin,” and “Sword Force, Pearl Shine.”

The “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” series is still in the development phase, so it will be some time before there’s any news on casting or release dates.
