Reported $20M Masters Purse Was Wrong, There’s More Money with a Twist

There is a change to the 2025 Masters purse, as it is no longer at $20 million.

On Saturday, Augusta National Golf Club announced it increased the purse to $21 million, with $4.2 million going to the winner.

Not only does the winner get a trophy and Green Jacket, but $600,000 more than the $3.6 million Scottie Scheffler won last year and almost a million more than what 2023 champ Jon Rahm made at $3.24 million.

From 2022 to now, the winner’s purse has increased by $1.5 million.

The Masters does not have the biggest purse in golf because that title goes to The PLAYERS Championship, which pays out $25 million. Rory McIlroy won $4.5 million that week.

Last year, the U.S. Open had a $21.5 million purse, so the Masters is now second among the majors.

Here is what the four majors paid out to the winners 2024:

1. Masters: $20 million, $3.6 million winner’s share — Scottie Scheffler won
2. PGA Championship: $18.5 million, $3.3 million winner’s share — Xander Schauffele won.
3. U.S. Open: $21.5 million, $4.3 million winner’s share — Bryson DeChambeau won.
4. The Open: $17 million, $3.1 million winner’s share — Xander Schafuffele won

For the past four years, The Masters has increased its purse. From 2021 to 2019, it was $11.5 million, and in 2018 and 2017, it was $11 million. That fact that the number continues to increase dramatically is a great indicator of a growing sport.

The 2016 champion Danny Willett and 2015 champ Jordan Spieth won $1.8 million out of a $10 million purse.

So in eight years, the money has more than doubled for players competing in The Masters. The first person to win a million dollars with his Green Jacket was Tiger Woods in 2001, winning $1,008,000 out of the $5.6 million pot.

The first four places will be awarded over $1 million.

Augusta National noted that the remainder of the professionals will receive their earnings from the $51,660 based on their scores.

But that is not all.

It was also announced that those who missed the cut and did not qualify for the weekend would still receive $25,000 each. That amount more than doubled from the previous $10,000 in recent years, but that money is not official PGA Tour earnings.
