Rory Mcilroy’s First 7-Word Reaction to Winning the Masters

The elation from Rory McIlroy was palpable after his birdie putt on the first hole of the sudden death playoff fell and he won his first Masters in dramatic fashion.
But in the midst of all the cheers, tears, adulation, handshakes and high fives from the patrons, fellow competitors, caddies, employees, suits, family and friends, there was only one thing on McIlroy’s mind.
“I’ve gotta go get a Green Jacket.”
That’s what he told his friends who’d flown all the way to Augusta to watch him win the final leg of the career Grand Slam he’s been waiting on for 11 years.
He could barely even get a word out before that. When he won, it was stunned silence. When Rory hugged his wife and daughter, he cried and just tried his best to get through it.
But when he got to his buddies, the silence ceased, and the realization set in.
It was Butler Cabin time. The moment he’d been working for his entire life. The peak of his already Hall of Fame-level career. His one shining moment.

It was the ultimate roller coaster for McIlroy over the course of four days, and even more so on Sunday.
He started the final round with a two-shot lead over Bryson DeChambeau, immediately surrendered it with a double-bogey on the first hole, then subsequently built the lead back up to four by the turn before losing it again after inexplicably hitting a short pitch on 13 into Rae’s Creek and missing a short putt to score a double bogey.
Justin Rose made a birdie at the 16th hole minutes later, while McIlroy bogeyed 14 to fall back into second place.
The ghosts of Augusta were swirling, and everybody felt it. Rory had to feel it, too.
He didn’t let it get to him this time, though. Miracle approach shots on 15 and 17 ended in a pair of birdies that gave him the lead for the third time on the day. And the momentum was back in his favor.
But it still wasn’t enough, as he missed a par putt on 18 to force the playoff he’d eventually win. Ups and downs, ins and outs. The entire scope of Rory McIlroy’s career in a matter of five hours.
So you can understand his reaction after winning the tournament that’s eluded him, often in heartbreaking fashion. Six lead changes will effect even any player. But when it’s finally time to put on that Green Jacket, nothing will stand in his way.
