New York man sentenced for fatally stabbing his pregnant wife and injuring his 2 children
MASONVILLE, N.Y. (TCN) — A 33-year-old man will spend three decades behind bars for killing his pregnant wife and injuring his two daughters last year.
In a news release, the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office announced that on May 13, a judge sentenced Drew Garnier to 30 years in prison followed by 15 years of post-release supervision. He previously pleaded guilty in March to first-degree manslaughter and two counts of first-degree assault.
According to New York State Police, on the night of Sept. 4, 2024, troopers responded to a home on Houck Road to a report of a domestic dispute. Authorities located 29-year-old Samantha Garnier with suspected stab injuries and rendered aid. She was airlifted to a hospital, and she and her unborn daughter died. Police said Drew Garnier’s two daughters were also transported to a hospital with stab injuries but survived. Prosecutors said Garnier later admitted to stabbing his wife and two daughters inside their home.
According to the district attorney’s office, during the defendant’s sentencing, Samantha Garnier’s father made an impact statement and said he believed “the murder had been motivated by the gender of the unborn child,” stating, “He wanted a boy.” The father also reportedly claimed the girls had been “traumatized” by the incident, but he has since adopted them.
In a statement, District Attorney Shawn Smith said, “To Samantha’s family, please know that every member of law enforcement, every employee of my office, and everyone at Safe Against Violence is thinking of you. While nothing we do can bring Samantha back, her killer has been put where he belongs.”
