Omaha teen sentenced for fatally stabbing 17-year-old in the chest
OMAHA, Neb. (TCN) — A 19-year-old woman will be eligible for parole when she’s nearly 80 after she was sentenced for fatally stabbing another teen on Mother’s Day last year.
KETV-TV reports a judge sentenced Kianna Opal to 60 to 80 years in prison in connection with the death of 17-year-old Ezra Sinkiawic. Opal previously pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and possession of a deadly weapon.
On May 12, 2014, at 3:10 a.m., Omaha Police Department officers responded to a home on North 53rd Street and learned that a victim had been stabbed and was on her way to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Officers went to the scene and spoke with witnesses who said Opal was still there. She was brought into custody and charged with criminal homicide and use of a weapon.
Sinkiawic died from her injuries at the hospital.
According to KETV, on the day of the incident, Opal reportedly threatened multiple people at her house with a Taser. The group left, but when Sinkiawic and another person returned, Opal allegedly found a knife and stabbed Sinkiawic in the chest.
Sinkiawic’s mother, Angela Cunningham, spoke at the sentencing hearing and said, “The other day for Mother’s Day there was two cardinals on my porch, and one just sat there. I said, ‘Is that you, baby? Are you coming home? Oh, just come home. Just go home.'”
