Easter holiday sparks tourism revival


In April 2025, 1.4 million guests spent 3.4 million tourism nights at tourist (commercial, private and other) accommodation establishments. The number of tourist arrivals was up by 17% and tourism nights by 16% compared to a year earlier, helped by Good Friday and Easter falling entirely in April this year. In January-April 2025, the number of domestic and international guests arriving to tourist accommodation establishments was 4.1% and 18% higher than in the same period of the previous year.

In April 2025 overall, the number of tourist arrivals and of tourism nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments increased by 17% and 16%, respectively. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of arrivals expanded by 5.6% and that of tourism nights by 4.4% compared to April 2024. 69% of guests arrived at commercial accommodation establishments, where their number grew by 14% from the previous year. Private and other accommodation establishments recorded 27% more tourist arrivals than a year earlier.

The number of domestic tourist arrivals and of domestic tourism nights were 12% and 14% higher respectively than in the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of domestic arrivals grew by 2.9% and that of domestic tourism nights by 0.5% compared to April 2024. The 683 thousand domestic guests spent 1.5 million tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 484 thousand tourist arrivals and nearly 1.1 million tourism nights. Hotels received 78% of the latter arrivals, where their number grew by 9.9% compared to a year earlier. The number of domestic tourist arrivals in private and other accommodation was 18% higher than in April 2024. The number of domestic tourist arrivals increased in all tourism regions compared to the same month last year, with the largest decrease in the Tokaj and Nyíregyháza area (27%). The number of domestic arrivals in tourist accommodation establishments was 14% higher at Lake Balaton and 5.7% higher in Budapest.

The number of international tourist arrivals was up by 22% and that of international tourism nights by 17% compared to the same month of the previous year. Based on seasonally adjusted data, the number of international arrivals grew by 11% and that of international tourism nights by 6.1% compared to April 2024. The 764 thousand international guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent almost 1.9 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 512 thousand tourist arrivals and nearly 1.3 million tourism nights. Hotels received 85% of the latter arrivals, where their number was 17% higher than a year earlier. The number of foreign tourist arrivals in private and other accommodation establishments was 35% higher than in April 2024. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the number of international tourist arrivals increased in all tourism areas, with the strongest growth (30%) in the Győr-Pannonhalma area. The number of international arrivals to tourist accommodation establishments increased by 28% at Lake Balaton and by 24% in Budapest.

A total of 25,834 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 2,446 commercial and 23,388 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.

Of commercial accommodation establishments, 955 hotels and 1,035 boarding houses were open for part or all of April.

The total gross sales revenue of tourist accommodation establishments amounted to HUF 87.6 billion, 25% more at current prices than a year earlier.

Széchenyi Recreation Card was used by cardholders to spend around HUF 3.1 billion, 8.3% more at current prices compared to the same month of the previous year, at tourist accommodation establishments.

In January-April 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year tourist accommodation establishments recorded a total of 4.6 million tourist arrivals, up 11%.

The number of domestic and international tourist arrivals was up by 4.1% and 18% respectively (nearly 2.2 million and 2.4 million) in tourist accommodation establishments.
