WWII Mortar Shell Discovered in Hungary’s Third Deepest Cave

A suspected World War II-era (1939-1945) explosive device was discovered in Vecsembükki-zsomboly, Hungary’s third deepest cave, located in Aggtelek National Park (northeastern part of Hungary), Honvédelem.hu reported. 

Members of the Hungarian Cave Rescue Service discovered what they believed to be an explosive device while conducting descent training exercises. The device was lifted from a depth of 60 meters in the Vecsembükki-zsomboly cave using alpine techniques by the regiment’s bomb disposal experts, in cooperation with the Cave Rescue Service and the Aggtelek National Park Directorate.

László Török, commander of the bomb disposal unit, determined that the device was an 81-millimeter German mortar shell from World War II.

The shell did not contain any explosives and was safely transported to the Hungarian Defense Forces’ central collection point.
