The five-star Mövenpick BalaLand Resort Lake Balaton has become the first hotel at the “Hungarian sea” to receive the prestigious Green Globe international sustainability certification, Turizmus.com reports.
Green Globe is a globally recognized international sustainability certification that can be obtained by tourism and hospitality operators in recognition of their environmentally friendly operations.
The certification is awarded based on the fulfillment of approximately 300 criteria.
The organization has representatives in over 83 countries.
The Mövenpick BalaLand Resort Lake Balaton in Szántód (southern shore), whose unique theme was inspired by Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in Eighty Days, follows a strict sustainability management plan (SMP) that focuses on key operational initiatives to minimize environmental impact. In this regard, their most important objectives are to reduce energy and water consumption, improve waste management, and support the preservation of biodiversity, they wrote in their statement.
Their first goal is to combat climate change and global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, as Accor hotel chain members have set a target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Accordingly, the hotel building has been equipped with several energy-efficient and renewable energy systems, including geothermal heat pumps and solar collectors to support the building’s energy supply.
Another important goal for the hotel is to reduce its water consumption by 45 percent by 2030,
reports the portal.
To achieve this goal, the Accor hotel chain has introduced a textile reuse program, under which guests who stay at the hotel for more than one night and do not use the daily cleaning service or request a change of bed linen receive 100 points on their Accor membership card. Guests are also encouraged to fill their drinking water bottles from the hotel taps, as the local drinking water is one of the best quality in Europe.
The accommodation on the shores of Lake Balaton cooperates with environmental authorities to showcase biodiversity and preserve habitats.
For instance, bird silhouettes are displayed on the hotel’s glass surfaces to prevent birds from flying into the windows.
The Mövenpick BalaLand Resort Green Team also coordinates a number of other sustainability initiatives, such as providing bicycle rental for guests. An important part of the hotel’s environmentally conscious operation is that sewer maintenance is carried out using an environmentally friendly BioAmp automated biological drain and wastewater treatment system, and the windows of the south and southwest-facing rooms are currently being fitted with heat-protective film.
The hotel’s future plans include providing special support to local producers, setting up its own composting facility, expanding its electric transport fleet, installing solar panels, and creating an educational trail on the shores of Lake Balaton to showcase the region’s wildlife.
