The majority of Hungarian voters disagree with the housing support repeal, the utility price cap rollback, the interest rate freeze removal, and the profit margin cap elimination that the European Commission wants to impose on Hungary, according to the latest opinion poll by the Nézőpont Institute.
At the beginning of June, the European Commission published its so-called country-specific recommendations for Hungary, in which it expects the country to implement various measures for 2025 and 2026. In this document, the Brussels body criticizes several government measures to support the livelihoods of the Hungarian population, and in several cases even prescribes their abolition or restriction for Hungary.
The Nézőpont Institute conducted an opinion poll to find out what Hungarian voters think about the Commission’s four demands, namely the housing support repeal, the utility price cap rollback, the interest rate freeze removal, and the profit margin cap elimination.
On all four issues, there is at least a relative majority that considers Brussels’ expectations unacceptable.
When it comes to loans to promote home ownership, 69% of the population rejects the European Commission’s recommendations to abolish these measures, while 61% rejects the utility price cap rollback, 47% rejects the interest rate freeze removal, and 48% rejects the profit margin cap elimination.
It is interesting to note that while the vast majority of pro-government voters oppose Brussels’ demands on all issues, the majority of voters of the opposition party Tisza consider the profit margin cap elimination (72% consider it acceptable), the interest rate freeze removal (55%) and the utility price cap rollback (48%) acceptable, while they support the government’s measures on housing subsidies (only 27% support their abolition).
According to a new Nézőpont poll, most Hungarian voters oppose EU pressure to roll back key economic protections like housing subsidies, utility price caps, interest rate freezes, and profit margin cuts.

According to the State Secretary for International Communication, the message is therefore clear: “There is widespread rejection of Brussels’ austerity policy in Hungarian society,” Zoltán Kovács said in a post on X.
