PM’s Political Director: Von der Leyen backed Ukrainian interests to the detriment of European interests
Balázs Orbán, the prime minister’s political director, said on Thursday that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has backed Ukrainian interests to the detriment of European interests with the support of the “grand coalition” of the Tisza Party and DK.
Orbán said in a post on Facebook that von der Leyen had been saved in the vote of no confidence in the European Parliament by “the liberal elite”, and then she “promised even more funding for the continuation of the war” at the conference on Ukraine’s reconstruction.
This, he added, amounted to an admission by Tisza and DK that they support Ukraine.
The political director quoted von der Leyen as saying in her speech that the EU pledged an enduring and unwavering commitment to Ukraine militarily, financially and politically.
He further quoted her as saying that since Russia’s full-scale invasion, Europe was and would remain Ukraine’s largest financial supporter, having handed over “almost 165 billion euros so far” and pledging further support in 2028 and beyond.
Orbán noted the commission president referred to the European Flagship Fund for Reconstruction of Ukraine as “the largest capital fund in the world to support reconstruction”.
He also cited her as saying that Ukraine was delivering on the reforms expected of the country in connection with its bid to become a member of the EU. He said the commission was “very clear” and “Ukraine is ready to open” the first chapters concerning core values.
Orbán also pointed out that von der Leyen concluded her speech with the cry “Slava, Ukraini, long live Europe!”.
