Romanian Gendarmes Escort Hungarian Fans from Football Match
An unusual scene unfolded at halftime during last Friday evening’s Romanian first division football match between FK Csíkszereda and Rapid Bucharest: five armed Romanian gendarmes entered the stadium’s VIP box and escorted six Hungarian citizens from the venue.
Legal proceedings were initiated against the guests, as Romanian law currently prohibits the consumption of alcohol at sporting events; although this regulation is expected to be repealed soon, it remains in effect.
Based on the official statement by the Mureș County Military Police, two of the six individuals were fined 250 lei each (51 euros) and banned from attending stadium events for six months.
Another person received a 200-lei (41 euros) fine for using offensive language in public. Based on the article by SzékelySport, all those involved were Hungarian nationals; several had attended the Tusványos festival, and the group included women and minors.
The local club, FK Csíkszereda, was fined 30,000 lei (6,140 euros) in connection with the incident. Club president Zoltán Szondy said he did not wish to comment on the matter at this time, as the club was considering appealing the fine.
The gendarmerie emphasized that their actions were solely intended to maintain public order and that those involved had been informed of their legal rights. The situation attracted significant media attention, particularly because of the presence of armed personnel and the events occurring in the VIP box.
