Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has praised Hungary’s modernization of the Hungaroring, calling it a global example of successful investment in motorsport infrastructure.
In an exclusive interview with Formula.hu, Domenicali highlighted the country’s commitment to Formula 1 and its long-term vision, describing the renovation as a model for other European venues.
The 40th Hungarian Grand Prix welcomes fans with a completely rebuilt main building and grandstand, the most visible stage of the circuit’s multi-year redevelopment. Domenicali, visiting the updated facilities for the first time, expressed admiration for the Hungarian government and promoter’s timely and thorough execution.
Hungary understood the value of Formula 1—not just as a sporting event, but as a national showcase,” he said. “The renovation shows what is possible when there is belief in a project.”
Domenicali emphasized Hungary’s strategic role in F1’s European footprint, noting consistent fan enthusiasm and sellout crowds. He also confirmed that they are open to discussing a contract extension beyond 2032, following Hungary’s recent long-term investments.
The Hungaroring revamp has attracted interest from other Grand Prix organizers, including Australia, with many looking to learn from Hungary’s approach to construction, crowd management, and operations.
Domenicali also addressed speculation about hosting MotoGP at the Hungaroring, saying it’s a realistic possibility after Liberty Media’s acquisition of MotoGP rights-holder Dorna.
From a technical standpoint, it’s definitely achievable, pending safety evaluations,
he noted.
Finally, he credited the success of the Hungaroring project to the synergy between F1, the government, promoter Ariane Frank-Meulenbelt, and track president Zsolt Gyulay, calling the collaboration “an international benchmark.”
This is proof that Europe can still invest and innovate when there is shared belief and long-term thinking.
commented Domenicali.
