Cowboys Insider Drops Alarming Injury Update on Key Rookie
Just when it seemed like the rookie cornerback Shavon Revel Jr. was making great progress, and potentially on pace to be on the field at some point during the preseason, a setback came into play.
According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Revel has been dealing with “some discomfort” during his rehab sessions while with the team out in Oxnard, California. As a result, he is not expected to return from his recovery in time for the Cowboys’ season opener.
Additionally, Revel’s father recently told 105.3 The Fan that Shavon’s recovery is expected to last “another 6-8 weeks,” per the Star-Telegram. That’s an unfortunate update, considering Dallas’s Executive Vice President Stephen Jones recently dropped a confident statement on the state of Revel’s recovery.
“I’m 99 percent sure he’ll be back in the next couple of weeks,” Jones said on San Antonio’s Sports Star.

While Jones was confident that Revel would be healthy enough to play within the next few weeks, he did make it clear that easing the rookie into the process is going to be crucial.
“It’s going to take a minute for him to get used to it and what it’s like to be a pro and those types of things,” Jones added.
Revel wrapped up his final season at East Carolina in 2025. After appearing in just three games, Revel tore his ACL during a practice session. His senior season ended early. Revel had just four tackles, two interceptions, and two pass deflections before going down.
He finished his college career with 24 games played. Revel produced 37 tackles, one sack, three interceptions, and 15 pass deflections during that time.
The Cowboys reportedly viewed Revel as a first-round talent. Due to his injury, the cornerback’s stock took a hit. He ended up dropping to the third round, where the Cowboys selected him with the 76th overall pick.
“We just think the world of him,” Jones said earlier this week.. “We really think he’s going to be a hell of a player in this league.”
Revel is one of a few cornerbacks dealing with setbacks currently. Josh Butler, Caelen Carson, and Trevon Diggs are missing extended time currently. Andrew Booth Jr. also missed Thursday’s practice, though his setback doesn’t seem too severe.
While Revel’s recent update is unfortunate, the Cowboys are playing the long game. There’s no need to rush a rookie into the fire. Getting one hundred percent is key for the 24-year-old.
