Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield Speaks Out About New NFL Rule Change
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has gone viral for quite a few moments both during games and off the field. He has been known to be a fan of using smelling salts during games to stay as alert and fired up as possible.
Unfortunately for Mayfield, the NFL made the decision to ban the use of smelling salts.
Why did the league decide to make that change? The NFL does not believe that using smelling salts is safe.

In a memo sent out to teams about the rule change, the league revealed that it believes smelling salts could hide symptoms of potential concussion.

While the move makes sense with concussions becoming a much bigger problem and handled more seriously, Mayfield is not a fan of the move. He was asked about the rule change.
During an appearance on the “Up & Adams Show,” Mayfield spoke out with his thoughts on the matter.
“Now you just gotta bring your own juice to the party,” Mayfield said. “I’m going to be severely affected to be honest with you.”
Adams then asked Mayfield what will replace smelling salts in the NFL. Mayfield responded with a hilarious answer.
“Just more headbutts,” he said.
Regardless of the smelling salts drama, Mayfield has turned his NFL career around with the Buccaneers. He has led Tampa Bay to the playoffs in each of his first two years with the franchise and has played like a legitimate star franchise quarterback.
Last season, Mayfield played in all 17 regular season games. He completed a sizzling 71.4 percent of his pass attempts for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Mayfield also ran for 378 yards and three scores.

After being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns, it has taken Mayfield some time to settle in. He has truly found a home with the Buccaneers.
Entering the 2025 season, Mayfield is now 30 years old. He still has quite a few years left in him playing at a high level. At least for now, Tampa Bay looks the part of a potential contender with Mayfield under center.
Mayfield likely will not suffer any negative effects on the field from not being able to use smelling salts. However, once again he was able to bring a laugh to fans.
