Buda Castle Comes Alive with Protestant Celebration This August 20

Once again this year, Hungary’s Reformed, Lutheran, Baptist, and Methodist churches will join forces to host the Protestant Feast (Protestáns Sokadalom) — a cultural, spiritual, and gastronomic festival marking the country’s founding day — in Budapest’s historic Buda Castle district.

Now in its third year, the multi-day event kicks off on the eve of the national holiday, August 19, with an ecumenical worship service at the Lutheran Church on Bécsi Gate Square. Bishop Péter Kondor, vice-president of the Ecumenical Council of Churches in Hungary (MEÖT), will deliver the sermon.

Festivities on August 20 will span three venues across the castle district, offering a diverse mix of light and classical music concerts, performances, children’s activities, and a craft fair.

Among the featured performers on Kapisztrán Square are renowned Hungarian musician Dániel Gryllus, the bands HolddalaNap and BorzsaVári, as well as gospel artists and interpreters of Lőrinc Szabó’s poetry.

For families, the Lutheran church on Bécsi Kapu (Vienna Gate) Square will host interactive sessions where children can explore the hidden treasures of the church through engaging activities.

Classical music enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy, including a choir gathering and an organ marathon designed to showcase the rich musical traditions of the participating denominations.

Beyond music, the program includes a temporary church history exhibition titled “Sola Scriptura” at the National Archives, and a series of panel discussions tackling timely topics such as climate protection, the challenges facing Gen Z, and the future of the church.

Organizers promise a vibrant celebration that blends faith, culture, and community in the heart of Budapest’s historic castle district.
