Major League Soccer outfit Charlotte FC plays host to Mexico’s Monterrey in the third and final round of group-stage fixtures in the 2025 Leagues Cup on Thursday. And both teams are in the last-chance saloon if they wish to reach the competition’s quarter-finals, with each in need of a statement victory if they’re to stand any realistic chance of making it through to the next phase of the tournament.
Neither club has managed to win in the latest edition of the Leagues Cup to date, with Los Rayados sitting 11th in the Liga MX table ahead of their trip to Bank of America Stadium. Not only does Domenec Torrent’s side need a win to make a late lunge into the top four heading through to the quarter-finals, but they also need to triumph in regulation time while hoping just about every team above them at present drops points in their next outings.
The situation is even more dire for a Charlotte side that has picked up a single point from its two outings to date. The Crown, which reached the quarters of this competition in 2023, realistically needs to beat Monterrey by a margin of at least six goals or so, again while hoping the competition above fails to add any more points.
The odds of making it beyond the group stage are incredibly slim for both organizations, despite their impressive performances in their respective domestic leagues this season. Former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has pulled Charlotte up to seventh in MLS’ Eastern Conference, while Monterrey is just three points off the summit in Liga MX’s Apertura.
