Siófok (southern shore of Lake Balaton) continues to be the most popular summer travel destination among Hungarians, according to data released by Szallas.hu. The travel booking platform reported that one-third of all regional summer bookings are for the Lake Balaton area, with apartments being the most sought-after accommodation type.
According to Szallas.hu’s latest analysis, Siófok leads the list of domestic summer destinations, followed by Budapest and Eger (northeastern Hungary). The top ten also includes Balatonfüred, Hévíz (near Lake Balaton) Hajdúszoboszló, Nyíregyháza, Gyula (southeastern Hungary) Szeged, and Pécs (southern Hungary).
The Balaton region dominates the regional breakdown, attracting 31% of all bookings. Northern Hungary follows with 16%, while the Southern Great Plain accounts for 11%. Western Transdanubia and the Northern Great Plain trail behind with 10% and 9% respectively.
Budapest and its surroundings garnered 8% of bookings, Southern Transdanubia 7%, Central Transdanubia 6%, and the Tisza Lake area finish the line with just 2%.
Apartments top the list of accommodation types, making up a third of all summer bookings. Hotels follow with 27%, and guesthouses come in third with 23%.
The majority of domestic bookings for the summer season do not include meals. Szallas.hu reports that 66% of bookings were for accommodation only, while 18% included breakfast. Half-board bookings made up 13%, all-inclusive just 1.4%, and full board accounted for only 0.1%.
The company also reported that 79% of bookings were valued at no more than 170,000 forints (cc. 430 euros), and a significant portion of payments were made using the SZÉP Card, Hungary’s government-supported employee benefit card. In June, SZÉP Card transactions accounted for 26% of online payments on Szallas.hu, rising to 28% in July.
Szallas.hu spokesperson Lili Kelemen noted that half of all summer bookings were made no more than 37 days before travel. Last-minute bookings continue to be a trend, with many travelers deciding on their trips just a day before departure—or even on the same day.
Among the most popular attractions this summer are Plázs Siófok night club, the Hungarospa in Hajdúszoboszló, the Gyula Castle Spa, the Széchenyi Thermal Bath in Budapest, and the Eger Castle.
