It is certainly safe to say that the Miami Dolphins season got off to a disastrous start.
A 33-8 drumming at the hands of the Indianapolis Colts handed Miami its first Week 1 loss since the 2020 season. There were several factors that played part in the Dolphins struggles but none were bigger than three turnovers from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Tagovailoa had two interceptions and a lost fumble on Sunday, accounting for all three Miami turnovers. According to ESPN Research, it is the seventh time since 2020 that Tagovailoa has turned the ball over three times in a game, the second most in that span.
In the post-game press conference, Tagovailoa was asked if he felt that his turnovers “come in bunches.” The Dolphins quarterback was not pleased with the question.
“I thought that was a wild comment, that I turn the ball over in bunches,” Tagovailoa said, according to ESPN.com. “That’s crazy. It just so happened that’s what happened (Sunday), it was what it was. Got to move forward from that, can’t make those same mistakes.”
In all reality, the question regarding Tagovailoa’s turnovers in bunches was a fair one. His seven interceptions last season all came in a three-game span, and now he’s responsible for three turnovers in the first week of this season.
We saw Sunday how his turnovers affected the game and consistently kept the Miami defense on the field. An already below-average defense will not be able to overcome consistent turnovers from the $212 million quarterback all season.
Tagovailoa will need to clean the turnovers up in the coming weeks. If not, he may be the reason that the Dolphins head toward their worst season since the five-win season in 2019 that earned them the No. 6 overall pick they used in 2020 to draft none other than Tagovailoa.
