Tango Takes Over Pécs: Three Days of Passion, Rhythm, and Dance

Visitors can look forward to dance competitions, performances, communal dancing, and film screenings at the fifth edition of the Pécs Tango Festival, taking place from September 26 to 28.

The three-day celebration of Argentine tango will feature concerts, a dance competition, lectures, a grand ball, and even a romantic picnic. While the Zsolnay Cultural Quarter will serve as the festival’s main venue, events will also be held at the medieval ruins in the Tettye district and various locations across the city center, according to a press release from the Zsolnay Heritage Management Nonprofit Ltd. (ZSÖK).

Festivities kick off on Friday, September 26, with the preliminary round of the first Pécs Amateur Tango Dance Competition. Couples will showcase their skills before a panel of judges and the audience, with the top contenders advancing to Saturday’s final. Following the preliminaries, an open milonga dance night invites everyone to take to the floor. As a side program, the documentary Muchachos! – Argentina in Football Fever will be screened at the House of Arts and Literature.

Saturday’s highlights include the dance final and awards ceremony, followed by live performances from the Mixtura Criolla duo and the Tango Harmony Budapest orchestra. A visual showcase titled Colores De Tango will feature three professional tango couples. The Argentine Tango Dance Theater will present its piece Existence, and the evening will conclude with a festive tango ball.

The festival will wrap up on Sunday with a closing event among the atmospheric ruins of Tettye.
