Budapest-based Wizz Air Expands in Slovakia

From November, Budapest-headquartered Wizz Air will open a new base in Slovakia, at M. R. Štefánik Airport in Bratislava (Pozsony). The investment will see two Airbus A321neo aircraft deployed, taking the capital’s airport to a whole new level: up to one million new passengers could arrive in a single year, with 12 new routes launching from Bratislava to destinations ranging from Barcelona to Oslo.

Although the proximity of Vienna Airport limits the potential for growth in Bratislava, the market niche can be exploited. Thanks to the new base of the low-cost airline, it will be possible to fly from Bratislava to the Catalan capital every day, but resorts and locations that facilitate economic cooperation will also become accessible from Slovakia’s largest airport, reports ma7.sk.

The arrival of Wizz Air is much more than just an expansion of flights. It is a strategic breakthrough that could make Bratislava a Central European air hub for the first time.

The city has often been overshadowed by the region’s giants, but Wizz Air’s decision sends a message that Slovakia is a significant market in its own right.

After six years, domestic flights between Bratislava and Košice will also resume. With ticket prices ranging from €20 to €75, flying could become a realistic alternative for domestic travel in Slovakia. Daily flights not only save passengers time, but also signal that the distance between the eastern and western parts of the country is no longer an insurmountable obstacle. One hour by plane versus six hours by train – the difference sends a strong message to both the business sector and tourism, writes the Slovakian Hungarian-language news portal.

The figures from Bratislava Airport speak for themselves this year, with almost 360,000 passengers served in July, the best monthly result ever. The previous record was set in 2018, before the pandemic. In the first seven months of 2025, a total of 1,234,087 passengers were served at M. R. Štefánik Airport, that is 16 percent more than in the period from January to the end of July last year.

In light of the new flights, the record is sure to be broken next year, as several tourist destinations are included among the flights starting in November.

According to AeroTime, Wizz Air will launch 12 new routes from Bratislava throughout the period between November 14 and December 16, 2025. The carrier will connect the Slovakian capital to Athens, Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga, Basel, Oslo, Lamezia Terme, Naples and Palermo in Italy, Niš in Serbia, as well as Plovdiv and Varna in Bulgaria.
