UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi and FM Péter Szijjártó (L-R)
Hungary and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are extending their successful bilateral cooperation into new areas, including the space, defense, and telecommunications industries, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced following talks in Budapest with UAE Minister of State for Foreign Trade Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi.
At a joint press conference, FM Szijjártó stated that the two sides also reviewed the implementation of 12 recently signed economic agreements, emphasizing that Hungary and the UAE enjoy excellent political relations without any unresolved issues, greatly supporting their growing economic partnership.
Last year, bilateral trade approached half a billion dollars, and with a 24% increase already this year, we are on track to surpass that level,”
Minister Szijjártó said.
He highlighted several recent successes, including: Over 1,000 tons of cheese exported to the UAE, more than 15 tons of pharmaceutical products shipped, participation by Hungarian digital service providers at major festivals in the Emirates. These developments, he noted, will now be complemented by deeper cooperation in space technology, defense, and telecommunications.
FM Szijjártó also welcomed the return of Wizz Air flights to the UAE, reporting that there are now 20 weekly flights between Budapest and Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
The minister emphasized the importance of partnerships with stable and cooperative countries amid global crises and geopolitical upheavals. In this era of profound transformation and serious crises, it is increasingly important to cooperate with countries that represent stability and peace in the world’s most volatile regions,” he said.
Hungary is strongly committed to restoring global cooperation based on mutual respect. The division of the world into blocs runs counter to our national interests.”
He stressed that Hungary and the UAE are allies in advocating for this type of global engagement. FM Szijjártó praised the UAE’s balanced foreign policy, pointing to its ability to:
-
Participate in the Abraham Accords,
-
Maintain strong ties with the United States,
-
And simultaneously integrate into the BRICS group of emerging economies.
FM Szijjártó also expressed strong support for the ongoing negotiations between the European Union and the UAE on a free trade and strategic partnership agreement.
Unfortunately, the current EU leadership has isolated the Union from some of the world’s most important economic players. We want the EU to once again play a stronger role in the global economy.”
He argued that the proposed free trade agreement with the UAE could significantly enhance Europe’s economic prospects.
Hungary strongly supports the conclusion of both the free trade and strategic partnership agreements between the EU and the UAE. This is directly aligned with Hungary’s national economic interests,”
concluded the minister.
