Sicily Shocked After Hungarian Tourists Attacked by Undocumented Migrants

A regional lawmaker from Italy’s ruling Lega (League) party is urging tougher measures following an alleged sexual assault on two Hungarian tourists in Sicily, reportedly carried out by three undocumented Moroccan men.

Vincenzo Figuccia, a Sicilian regional assembly member for the right-wing Lega party, called on the regional authorities to take immediate and decisive action in response to the incident, which occurred in the town of Paternò, near Catania.

Sicily must say no to becoming Europe’s migrant camp, unable to protect either its own residents or those who come here to work or vacation,”

Figuccia declared.

In a strongly worded statement, the politician proposed a “multi-pronged commitment” by the regional government, including:

  • the creation of a permanent committee to combat violence against women,

  • chemical castration for perpetrators of the most serious sexual crimes,

  • stronger support systems for victims,

  • harsher sentencing with “the maximum penalties,” and

  • increased territorial patrols involving both citizens and military personnel.

Vicenzo Figuccia expressed solidarity and compassion for the two Hungarian victims, stating the event has shocked the local community in Paternò.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also reacted to the incident on his social media accounts, thanking Italy’s deputy PM Matteo Salvini for taking a stand, and he also called Brussels migration policy “unacceptable”.

According to La Sicilia, a regional newspaper, the alleged assault took place last week. The three Moroccan suspects, all reportedly without legal residency in Italy, were arrested and remanded in custody by the Catania court on multiple charges, including gang rape.

Vicenzo Figuccia, who holds responsibilities for public safety and crime prevention in the regional assembly of Sicily — an autonomous region with a population of nearly 5 million — said:

Security cannot be reduced to a slogan. It is a right that must be guaranteed through concrete actions.”

He concluded his statement with a political rallying cry:

Let us protect our people, let us protect our land.”

The Lega party, known for its hardline stance on immigration and crime, has been advocating for the introduction of chemical castration for perpetrators of severe sexual violence for over two decades.
