Texas mom accused of beating baby to death and leaving her in field in 1998
LONGVIEW, Texas (TCN) — A 47-year-old mother stands accused of fatally beating her newborn baby and leaving her body in a field nearly 27 years ago.
In June 1998, the Longview Police Department found the infant’s remains near West Harrison and Jordan Valley roads. According to KETK-TV, the baby was left in a trash bag.
Investigators suspect the child was born healthy but had been fatally beaten, and her death was ruled a homicide.
Despite their efforts, detectives were unable to identify the victim or her parents at the time, and the case went cold.
According to police, officials recently used advanced genetic profile technology and identified the victim’s mother as Misty Mitchell. Detectives arrested Mitchell on a charge of capital murder. She was booked into the Gregg County Jail on Sept. 9 and remains held on a $750,000 bond.
