Hundreds Reach Hungarian-Language Schools via Bus Program in Transylvania

Hundreds of Hungarian-speaking children in Romania are gaining daily access to education in their mother tongue, thanks to a cross-border school bus program expanding across Transylvania and beyond. Launched by the Rákóczi Association in partnership with the School Foundation, the initiative now transports over 500 students from scattered Hungarian communities to 35 Hungarian-language schools.

531 Transylvanian students are transported daily to Hungarian-language schools by 39 buses operated by the Rákóczi Association. As part of a joint program between the Rákóczi Association and the School Foundation, 35 Hungarian schools are participating, primarily from the dispersed Hungarian-inhabited counties of Transylvania and Partium. The goal of the program is to make Hungarian-language education accessible to students living in these scattered communities, reads a statement from the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (RMDSZ).

With this support, they aim to prevent families from enrolling their children in closer Romanian-language schools simply because traveling to more distant Hungarian schools would pose a financial burden.

In the 2025–2026 school year, the program extends to the counties of Arad, Bistrița-Năsăud (Beszterce-Naszód), Bihor (Bihar), Brașov (Brassó), Alba (Fehér), Hunedoara (Hunyad), Cluj (Kolozs), Mureș (Maros), Maramureș (Máramaros), Sibiu (Szeben), Timiș (Temes), and Sălaj (Szilágy), as well as to Bacău County (Bákó) in Moldavia. In the Csángó-inhabited region, the school bus takes the young students to the Hungarian House in Luncani (Lábnyik).

Zoltán Levente Nagy, president of the School Foundation, stated that this is the third year the Rákóczi Association’s buses have been providing assistance to settlements that had no access to school buses from other sources.

Preserving and strengthening mother-tongue education is our shared responsibility, and the bus program is an important tool in this effort. We thank the Rákóczi Association for their cooperation, and the government of Hungary for their support,”

the statement quoted the president of the School Foundation.

RMDSZ also noted that in many locations, school buses are available through programs run by the Romanian state. Across Transylvania, a total of 413 vehicles are transporting Hungarian children.
