Yankees Send Message on Anthony Volpe’s Future as Team’s Shortstop

Anthony Volpe has been the Yankees’ starting shortstop all season, but he has been less than stellar.

He entered Friday leading the American League in errors and hitting .206. The team also revealed that Volpe has been playing through a shoulder injury that required a cortisone shot recently.

Through three seasons, Volpe has been a glove-first shortstop, and this season his defense has been terrible. Offensively, he leaves much to be desired, and many fans are calling for a change. Despite his struggles, Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman have consistently stuck by him, and Cashman spoke on his future after a terrible season.

“Yeah, I think he’s a good a player,” Cashman said when asked if Volpe was still the team’s shortstop of the future, per The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner. “This year notwithstanding, I think he’s got a lot of abilities that are positive and, this year notwithstanding, he’s had a tough stretch. I think he’s someone that we can count on and we believe in, but acknowledging at the same time, this isn’t the season that we expected or he expected, but that doesn’t change our viewpoint of what he’s capable of. I think he’s a really talented guy, and I think he has a chance to be a positive impact on us.”

Volpe’s defense has taken a drastic slide, which has been a huge shock to fans. He won a Gold Glove Award as a rookie. Perhaps the shoulder injury he has been playing through is playing a role in his consistent throwing errors. However, he has not indicated that the injury is to blame.
