Boston College is still getting over the narrowest of double-overtime defeats to Michigan State when it makes the coast-to-coast trip to a winless Stanford on Saturday. The Cardinal endured its own slim loss at Hawaii in Week 1 before suffering a much more conclusive defeat at BYU last time out.
And home field will be about the only advantage running in Stanford’s favor, as the GM-head coach reunion of Andrew Luck and Frank Reich has failed to bear fruit thus far. Quarterback Ben Gulbranson has struggled to take much inspiration from the team’s fearless leader, throwing three interceptions and not a single touchdown through two games.
Meanwhile, Eagles QB Dylan Lonergan has been having himself some fun, even if the 42-40 loss to the Spartans didn’t look like it from the outside. The sophomore transfer from Alabama had his second four-TD game of the season against Michigan State, completing 34 passes for 390 yards, albeit in a losing result.
The main point of improvement for BC lies in defense after DC Tim Lewis saw his setup exposed time and again by the Spartans. That, and the inevitable fatigue of travelling cross-country, will be the silver linings for a Stanford side that enters this matchup as a 12.5-point underdog.
