Automotive Industry Set for Record Growth as German Manufacturers Expand

The Hungarian automotive industry is once again poised for tremendous success, as the largest German vehicle manufacturers continue to have confidence in Hungary, and if the industry grows, so will our country’s economy, said Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Friday in Munich.

Following negotiations at the IAA international mobility exhibition, the minister said that the largest German vehicle manufacturers decided to locate the most important production processes of the new era of electric drive technology in our country.

“Audi will break production records in the field of car manufacturing in Győr (western Hungary) by the end of the year, they will start manufacturing new-generation electric motors next spring, and they will launch a very serious training program worth 1.5 billion forints (3.75 million euros) to ensure that all Audi employees in Hungary can meet the technological requirements of the new automotive era,” he said.

“BMW will open its factory in Debrecen (east of Budapest) on September 26, and this factory will produce the new iX3 model, which is the real star here in Munich at one of the world’s largest automotive exhibitions. Orders are coming in at such a rate that we are already discussing what new plans we can collaborate with BMW on in the coming period,” he continued.

“The construction of the Mercedes plant in Kecskemét is also nearing completion, which will be Hungary’s largest car factory, and Mercedes has decided to locate the production of its C-class electric cars in Kecskemét (central Hungary). The new factory in Kecskemét will be able to produce 300-350 thousand cars a year,” he added.

Péter Szijjártó emphasized that the automotive industry, which is the backbone of the Hungarian economy, is set for outstanding growth.

“We have excellent prospects. German automotive companies have placed their absolute trust in Hungary, and Hungary and the Hungarian people have earned this trust, which will lead to further investments and developments in Győr, Kecskemét, and Debrecen,” he summarized.

The minister held talks with Gerd Walker, member of the Board of Management of Audi AG, Milan Nedeljkovic, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Jörg Burzer, member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, and Robin Zeng, founder and president of CATL, among others.
