Apple’s iOS 26 update is rolling out globally today, bringing with it one of the most significant overhauls to the iPhone experience in years.
The update features a redesigned user interface, deeper artificial intelligence integration, and major improvements across core apps like Messages, Maps, and Phone. Apple confirmed the update would begin rolling out at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time (1:00 p.m. ET) on September 15.
Why It Matters
iOS 26 marks the biggest visual change to iPhones since iOS 7 was released in 2013, introducing a so-called Liquid Glass design system across compatible devices. This design allows app icons and interfaces to appear more translucent and fluid. The update also makes Apple Intelligence, Apple’s suite of generative AI features, an integral part of its systems. It powers features like Live Translation, Call Screening, and intuitive Maps routing.

The Liquid Glass interface not only updates the home screen but transforms interactions within apps like Music, where users can now swipe between views instead of tapping. Other enhancements include new gesture controls and a redesigned lock screen.
Using Apple Intelligence, Apple’s new “live translation” feature can translate texts, FaceTime, and phone calls in multiple languages. It can also translate live conversations in real-time for users wearing Apple earbuds.
When receiving a call from an unknown number, iPhones will now auto-answer and ask the caller for their name and reason for calling. That information is then shown or played back to the user, who can choose whether or not to answer.

The update also allows iPhones to screen calls, making an AI stay on hold with customer service agents and notify users when a human representative becomes available.
The Apple Maps update will mean the device learns a user’s routine, offering more relevant alerts on travel delays. It also adds a new “Visited Places” section to track previous destinations.
iPads also benefit from iOS 26’s improvements. One of the platform-specific upgrades is desktop-style windowing, allowing users to run multiple apps in resizable panes—a long-requested productivity feature for tablets.

As Apple rolls out iOS 26, users can expect additional tweaks and bug fixes in follow-up updates over the coming weeks. The company has not yet confirmed when Apple Intelligence will be available in all regions. The Live Translation feature is limited in the European Union for now.
The update is compatible with iPhone 11 and newer models, with the full feature set dependent on device capabilities. Apple encourages users to update through Settings > General > Software Update or by connecting their iPhone to a computer.
